THE ABOVE PHOTOGRAPH SHOWING THE SHAH of Iran, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi
(right), and General Fazlollah Zahedi (left) was taken in April 1955, a year-and-a-half after the
coup. Zahedi was hand-picked by the CIA to take control of the military and the government of
Iran following the staged coup because it was believed Zahedi would appear more credible to
the Iranian people than had the Shah taken over immediately himself. The CIA believed Zahedi
would work with the U.S. and British intelligence and would be willing to turn over power to
the Shah after the coup.
