ON AUG. 19, 1953, MOSSADEQ TURNED HIMSELF IN and was put on trial by
judges allied with the Shah. Mossadeq was sentenced to death for 'trying to overthrow
the monarchy," but his sentence was commuted and he was placed under house arrest
in his village outside Tehran until his death in 1967. "My only crime," Mossadeq said
during his trial, "is that I nationalized the oil industry and removed from this land the
network of colonialism and the political and economic influence of the greatest
empire on Earth."
