U.S. officials, such as Dulles, exploited the threat of communism and the spread of Soviet influence to justify orchestrating a coup in Iran in that year. Objective historians now contend that it was Mossadeq's call to nationalize Iran's oil, which left out the British Anglo-Iranian Oil Company, that actually prompted the elaborate scheme.
