IN 1953, SECRETARY OF STATE John Foster Dulles, shown here with President
Eisenhower in 1956, was named Time magazine's "Man of the Year" for his efforts to
fight the spread of communism. U.S. officials, such as Dulles, exploited the threat of
communism and the spread of Soviet influence to justify orchestrating a coup in Iran in
that year. Objective historians now contend that it was Mossadeq's call to nationalize
Iran's oil, which left out the British Anglo-Iranian Oil Company, that actually
prompted the elaborate scheme.
