in Egypt. Sabbath thus anticipates the remission of slaves (e.g., Deut.<br />

15:12–18; 23:15–16).<br />

In connection with Proper 4/Year B, Deuteronomy 5:12–15 is paired<br />

with two stories that take place on the Sabbath in Mark 2:23–3:6. Unfortunately,<br />

Mark shaped these stories to justify tensions between the Markan<br />

community and the traditional Jewish community.<br />

Today’s lection recalls how God made a second beginning with the human<br />

family (see Proper 4/YearA). In Genesis 9:1, God restates the purpose of<br />

human life as the same as in Genesis 1:26–28. According to Genesis 9:2,<br />

this vocation is necessary in the post-fall world because the relationship<br />

between humankind and animals is still under the curse of Genesis<br />

3:14–19 (see Proper 5/Year B).<br />

Because killing disrupts the divine purposes for life more than any other<br />

action, it receives detailed attention in verses 5–6. Only now, after the<br />

flood, does God explicitly permit the descendants of Noah to eat meat,
