o army <strong>of</strong> the Guide, do not be frightened by this valley<br />

Though it be rough and roadless.<br />

<strong>The</strong>re are no Jinn therein and it is quite enemyless.<br />

Soon you will be treated like children with love and mercy.<br />

<strong>Al</strong>lah will grant you wealth and children aplenty.<br />

Upon hearing this poem and the promised booty I prostrated out <strong>of</strong> thanks to <strong>Al</strong>lah<br />

and found the Muslims to have awoken due to the recitation <strong>of</strong> the poem. I<br />

memorised one couplet <strong>of</strong> the poem while Sammah memorised the remaining three<br />

which he recited to me. <strong>The</strong> Muslims were overjoyed at what they heard from the<br />

unseen voice and were pleased with the promise <strong>of</strong> booty.<br />

24) Capture <strong>of</strong> al-Jlnan<br />

We remained in the valley until morning when I led them in Salatul Fajr. At sunrise<br />

we left the valley. By this time I recognised the land and mountain which was ar-<br />

Raqim Mountain. I called out loudly, "<strong>Al</strong>lahu Akbar!" <strong>The</strong> Muslims echoed my call<br />

and asked, "What do you see, Ibn 'Amir?"<br />

"We have reached the lands <strong>of</strong> <strong>Syria</strong>," I replied, "This is ar-Raqim Mountain."<br />

note).<br />

Because most <strong>of</strong> the men were uneducated bedouins, they queried, "What is ar-<br />

Raqim?"<br />

"Do you not know?" I exclaimed and told them the story which amazed them. I then<br />

took them to the Cave where they performed Salah.<br />

We continued until we approached 'Amman. From here I diverted to a village called<br />

al-Jinan. <strong>The</strong> village-chiefs were at that time marching out <strong>of</strong> the village with their<br />
