12) 'Umar" arrives at Baytul Muqaddas
'Vmar ~ travelled, intending to traverse the mountain-pass through until Baytul

The Muslims proclaimed, "La ilaha illalliih wallahu Akbar." The people of Baytul
Muqaddas heard and the patriarch said to them, "Woe unto you! Why are the 'Arabs
making a noise for no reason? Go and investigate."
One of them who knew 'Arabic called out to the Muslims, "0 'Arabs, what is
happening?"
A Muslim replied, "The Commander of the Believers, 'Umar bin al-Khattab has
come to us from al-Madinah, We are shouting for joy."
The man went to inform the patriarch who bowed his head in silence.
After having led the Muslims in Saliitul Fajr the next day, 'Vmar • said to
Abu'Ubaydah es, "0 'Amir, go and inform the people that I have arrived."
AbU 'Ubaydah es went and called out, "0 people of this city, the Commander of the
Believers has arrived. What will you do about what you had previously said?"
The patriarch was informed. He came, wearing monk's garb surrounded by the
monks, priests and bishops. He carried in front of him the special cross which they
only took out on festivals. With him was Batlic, the governor, who said, "0 Father,
