Part 3: <strong>Al</strong> - Yarmuk<br />

"0 archers, keep firmly to your positions. If you see the enemy attacking us then<br />

shower them with arrows taking the name <strong>of</strong> <strong>Al</strong>lah. Do not fire sporadically but as if<br />

every arrow was fired from a single bow. If they should charge at you, maintain your<br />

position until further orders from me."<br />

<strong>The</strong>y complied with what they had been ordered to do.<br />

AbU Sufyan ~ went to his son, Yazid ~. Yazid's ~ men surrounded their<br />

commander who was holding the flag and had resolved on attacking the enemy and<br />

waging Jihad.<br />

AbU SufYan ~ : My son, if you do good AIHih will be good to you. Fear <strong>Al</strong>lah as He<br />

should be feared. Help the Din <strong>of</strong> <strong>Al</strong>lah and the laws <strong>of</strong> his Prophet lao Beware <strong>of</strong><br />

being afraid because what our Rabb decrees He implements. Be patient with your<br />

men - patience <strong>of</strong> the highest degree. Beware, I repeat beware <strong>of</strong> deserting for then<br />

<strong>Al</strong>lah's wrath will afflict you.<br />

Yazid ~ : I will persevere to the limits <strong>of</strong> my ability. I ask <strong>Al</strong>lah to help me.<br />

56) Bravery <strong>of</strong> az-Zubayr .-<br />

Yazid ~ then waved the flag and called his men to battle. <strong>The</strong>y attacked the nearest<br />

Roman force and remained in combat until they caused them major damage. This<br />

attack emanated from the centre and continued until a patrician came with a<br />

massive spear in hand. He wore a gold cross and led a force <strong>of</strong> about 10,000<br />

cavalry. This cavalry attacked the right-wing which was under 'Amr bin al-'A~.<br />

Some Muslims fled and the Romans managed to enter the first ranks around 'Amr<br />

.,. Those around 'Amr ~ fought back. Sometimes they gained the upper hand and<br />

at times fell back.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Romans amassed against the Muslims and pushed them back until they pressed<br />

them right against the hill upon which the women were stationed. <strong>The</strong>y then<br />

proceeded to surround the hill.<br />

A woman called out, "Where are the helpers <strong>of</strong> the Din? Where are the defenders <strong>of</strong><br />

the Muslims?"<br />

Az-Zubayr bin al-' Awwam ~ was sitting with his wife, Asma bint Abi Bakr, having<br />

his inflamed eyes treated. Upon hearing a woman shout, "Where are the helpers <strong>of</strong><br />
