36 ELGIN BAYLOR 1959 NBA ALL-STAR GAME TROPHY A trophy presented to Elgin Baylor by the NBA for being named to the 1959 NBA All-Star team. The trophy consists of a gold colored metal basketball mounted on top of a two-tiered wood base. Mounted onto the wood base are two metal eagle sculptures. Mounted between the two tiers of the base is an engraved metal plaque that reads “N.B.A./ East-West/ All Star Game/ Detroit January 23 1959/ Elgin Baylor.” Baylor was named the Most Valuable Player of the 1959 NBA All-Star Game, sharing the honor with Bob Pettit of the St. Louis Hawks. 17 1/2 by 9 by 9 inches $5,000-8,000 30 | PROPERTY FROM THE COLLECTION OF ELGIN BAYLOR 37 ELGIN BAYLOR 1959 TELEGRAMS RESPONDING TO DISCRIMINATION A collection of five Western Union telegrams sent to Elgin Baylor January 17- 19, 1959, after Baylor refused to play in a game in Charleston, West Virginia. When Baylor wasn’t admitted to a hotel with his teammates in Charlotte, North Carolina, in November, he was quoted as saying “I’m no dog; if this ever happens again, I won’t play.” In Charleston, West Virginia, on January 17, 1959, when the Minneapolis Lakers were playing the Cincinnati Royals, Baylor and two African-American Lakers teammates, Boo Ellis and Ed Fleming, couldn’t register at the hotel where the team was registered. The day of the game, Baylor refused to play. Five Western Union telegrams were sent to Baylor congratulating him for standing up for “real principles and blatant racism.” The telegrams are from Cecil E. Newman, editor of the Minneapolis Spokesman and St. Paul Recorder; Brad Pye Jr., sports editor; William H. Gray Jr., pastor of the Bright Hope Baptist Church; Reverend Leon Sullivan, pastor of the Zion Baptist Church; and L.I. Brockenbury. Largest, 8 by 6 ¼ inches $600-800 38 ELGIN BAYLOR 1959 S. RAE HICKOK AWARD BELT BUCKLE An S. Rae Hickok Champion belt buckle presented to Elgin Baylor in March 1959 by the Hickok Manufacturing Company located in Rochester, New York, honoring Baylor as a professional athlete. The 10k yellow gold belt buckle is stamped Hickok and on the front features a figure surrounded by a laurel wreath and reads “S. Rae Hickok Award/ Professional Athlete/ EB.” The back of the belt buckle reads “Hickok Champion/ March 1959/ Elgin Baylor/ Basketball.” A section of the belt buckle is not 10k gold but a metal alloy. Baylor was presented the award after being named the NBA 1958-59 Rookie of the Year. $300-500
39 ELGIN BAYLOR SIGNED MINNEAPOLIS LAKERS PHOTOGRAPH A framed photograph of Elgin Baylor posing in his Minneapolis Lakers uniform. In the 1958-59 season, Minneapolis forward Baylor averaged 24.9 points and 15 rebounds per game while being named to his first of seven consecutive All-NBA First Teams as well as NBA Rookie of the Year.
