ELGIN BAYLOR 1958-59 ROOKIE OF THE YEAR TROPHY
A Hy Turkin Memorial Award presented to Elgin Baylor by the
Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association (MBWA) for being
named the NBA’s 1958-59 Rookie of the Year. The MBWA
named the award after Turkin, a long-time sports reporter for the
New York Daily News, following Turkin’s death in 1955. The
award is presented annually to pro basketball’s rookie of the
year. The silverplated double-handled trophy is mounted to a
plastic column base that reads “Hy Turkin Memorial Award/ Pro
Rookie of the Year/ 1958-59/ Elgin Baylor/ Minneapolis Lakers/
Presented by/ Metropolitan/ Basketball Writers Assn.”

ELGIN BAYLOR 1959 ATHLETE OF THE YEAR
TROPHY
An Athlete of the Year trophy presented to Elgin Baylor in
1959 by The Coca-Cola Company. The silverplated trophy
features a male and female figure with a cloth
draped over the two of them. The male is holding a laurel
branch in the air and the pair are standing on a
globe with the words “Glory” engraved into the bottom.
The silverplated scene is mounted on top of a wood base
with a white metal plaque affixed to the side that reads
“100% - 1959/ Athlete of the Year/ Basketball/ Elgin
Baylor/ Donor/ The Coca-Cola Company/ Atlanta,
Georgia.” Baylor was presented the award after being
named the 1958-59 NBA Rookie of the Year.
