ELGIN BAYLOR 1958-59 NBA ROOKIE OF THE YEAR AND ALL-STAR CERTIFICATE
A certificate awarded to Elgin Baylor by The Sporting News honoring him for being named the NBA’s Rookie of the Year for the 1958-59 season
and for being selected to the 1959 NBA All-Star Team. The certificate reads “The Sporting News/ congratulates/ Elgin Baylor/ Rookie of the Year/
on his selection to the annual/ National Basketball Association All-Star Team/ for the 1958-59 season/ as chosen in a poll of all/ National Basketball
Association Players/ by/ The Sporting News.” The plaque is signed by J.G. Taylor Spink, publisher of The Sporting News, and is dated March
1959. The 1959 NBA All-Star Game was played on January 23, 1959, at Olympia Stadium in Detroit, Michigan. Baylor, in his rookie season, was
named co-MVP of the game, sharing the honor with Bob Pettit. The certificate is housed in a leather presentation folder with “The Sporting News’/
1958-59/ N.B.A. All-Star Basketball Team” embossed on the cover. Included in the folder are a sheet listing the players who took part in voting for
the awards and a list of the other NBA All-Stars and award winners for the 1958-59 season.
