MIR MURTAZA CASE TRIBUNAL<br />

KARACHI, Oct 30, 1996: Mr. Shoaib Sadil, DIG Karachi range today told the<br />

3-member inquiry tribunal that by 9.30 pm Mir <strong>Murtaza</strong> <strong>Bhutto</strong> critically<br />

injured in the police firing on September 20 last was shifted to the Mid-East<br />

hospital. During cross examination by Mr. Mujeeb Pirzada, the Counsel for<br />

two widows, Ms. Ghinwa and Ms. Badrunissa and the party, he admitted that<br />

Ashiq Hussain Jatoi, a front rank leader of the PPP (Shaheed <strong>Bhutto</strong>) group<br />

also injured in the firing was brought to the Jinnah Post Graduate Medical<br />

Centre. Late in the night the delay was due to his having been declared<br />

already dead. The tribunal headed by Mr. Justice Nasir Aslam Zahid, a judge<br />

of the Supreme Court of Pakistan consists of Mr. Justice Dr. Ghous<br />

Mohammed and Mr. Justice Amanullah Abbasi.<br />

On the date of incident, by 10.30 pm, the injured persons were shifted to<br />

various hospitals. He said, he got this information from the then SSP South<br />

Wajid Ali Durrani, who had come to his official bunglow just opposite the<br />

place of occurrence at about 9.20 pm.<br />

He said, that from the interrogation of Ali Mohammad Sonara who was<br />

arrested from near the Eidgah Police Station on the night of September 17, it<br />

was revealed that some criminals and terrorists were accompanying Mir<br />

<strong>Murtaza</strong> <strong>Bhutto</strong> on the date of the incident. He said that since his take-over in<br />

July last year as the DIG Karachi, not a single person of some stature<br />

belonging to any organization or political party had been arrested prior to the<br />

September 20th incident. He said that after the two bomb blast incident each<br />

near the Karachi Gymkhana and the Sindh Secretariat respectively less than<br />

ten workers belonging to Mir <strong>Murtaza</strong>’s party were taken in custody. He<br />

said, it was not correct to suggest that over two hundred PPP (Shaheed<br />

<strong>Bhutto</strong> Group) workers were apprehended.<br />

He said, that he had met twice the Intelligence Bureau Chief Masood Sharif<br />

from September 15 to September 20 in connection with some official business.<br />

He had also seen him at the Karachi Airport when the Prime Minister Ms.<br />

Benazir had arrived here at 2.30 am (night) after the incident around 8.30 pm<br />

of September 20.<br />
