SURGEON APPEARS IN TRIBUNAL<br />

KARACHI, Feb. 19, 1997: A general surgeon of the Aga Khan University<br />

Hospital, with specialisation in orthopaedic field, told a judicial tribunal of<br />

inquiry on Wednesday that the bullet injuries suffered by one of the assistant<br />

superintendents of police, Shahid Hayat, was not self-suffered and it was<br />

neither a superfluous wound.<br />

Dr Raja Mohammad Shahzad Khan, 35, who had performed surgical<br />

operation on ASP Shahid Hayat, was produced as a witness by counsel,<br />

Karim Khan Agha, appearing for the DIG Karachi, and two ASPs involved in<br />

the murder of Mir <strong>Murtaza</strong> <strong>Bhutto</strong> at Clifton on Sept 20. A bullet had passed<br />

through the ASP's left thigh and the tribunal asked him whether the injury<br />

could have been caused by his own people, to which he replied there was<br />

remote possibility.<br />

Q: Was it self-suffered?<br />

A: There is high percentage possibility it was not self-suffered.<br />

Q: What is the proof?<br />

A: A less dangerous point is selected, but in this case it was a vital part of the<br />

thigh and the wound was close to the blood vessel and the vein and if they<br />

were hit he could have lost his leg.<br />

Q: According to his experience can he mention the distance from where it was<br />

fired?<br />

A: It was fired from a distance of three to 30 feet and a high velocity fire-arm<br />

has been used.<br />

Q: It would have been a low velocity fire-arm?<br />

A: No.<br />

Q: The AKUH is not designated as medicolegal hospital and how the ASP<br />

was admitted and treated?<br />
