GRIM SITUATION IN LARKANA<br />

LARKANA, Sep 21, 1996: Situation in Larkana was reported grim as<br />

supporters of <strong>Murtaza</strong> <strong>Bhutto</strong> had the shops, schools, transport shut down as<br />

soon as the news of his demise spread in the morning and began converging<br />

at his Al-<strong>Murtaza</strong> residence. Reports from Nawabshah also said shopping<br />

centers and markets shut down soon after news of his death became widely<br />

known. Schools and colleges were also closed and students sent back home.<br />

Vice Chancellor Quaid-e-Awam Engineering University Prof. Jan<br />

Muhammad Keerio announced an indefinite closure of the campus and hostel<br />

residents were asked to vacate. Law-Enforcing Agencies were deployed at the<br />

University, railway station and other important buildings. Reports from<br />

Naushero Feroz and other towns also spoke of closure in those areas.<br />

Lyari and Malir areas of Karachi also grew tense following spread of news of<br />

<strong>Murtaza</strong>'s death. In Malir district shops closed in the residential areas while<br />

situation was normal on the main roads. According to Kalri police in Lyari a<br />

mob assembled near Mauripur Truck Stand and pelted stones. It however<br />

dispersed on arrival of police contingents. Residents of various sections of<br />

Lyari also reported hearing sporadic aerial firing in their vicinity. No major<br />

untoward incident was however reported.<br />

Condolences over the demise of Mir <strong>Murtaza</strong> <strong>Bhutto</strong>, elder son of former<br />

Prime Minister Shaheed Zulfikar Ali and brother of Prime Minister Benazir<br />

continued to pour into news media offices. Among them were political<br />

leaders, various organisations and individuals from different walks of life.<br />
