TEN INJURED AS POLICE, RIOTERS CLASH IN<br />

LARKANA<br />

LARKANA, Sept 23, 1996: Police resorted to firing and tear gassing as angry<br />

protesters took to the streets, torched a truck, pelted stones on vehicles and<br />

ransacked banks here on Monday to mourn the killing of <strong>Murtaza</strong> <strong>Bhutto</strong>.<br />

Eight PPP (SB) activists were allegedly injured in the firing.<br />

Two constables — Shoukat Jatoi and Pir Bakhsh Khokhar — also suffered<br />

injuries and were admitted to Chandka Medical College Hospital.<br />

Eyewitnesses said police opened fire on a procession at Lahore Regulator<br />

coming from Mirokhan Chowk to Al-<strong>Murtaza</strong>. Three persons identified as<br />

Nadim Qureshi, Aamir Abbas and Abdul Ghaffar Chandio, Deputy<br />

Secretary-General of PPP(SB) youth wing were injured. They were taken to<br />

Al-<strong>Murtaza</strong> where a camp had been set up to treat the injured.<br />

Rao Rashid, secretary-general of PPP-Shaheed <strong>Bhutto</strong>, speaking at a news<br />

conference in Larkana on Monday called for a day of anti-government strikes,<br />

protests and marches on Thursday.<br />

Khair Mohammad Magsi, district president of Sindh Taraqqi Pasand Party<br />

said police resorted to firing at Pakistan Chowk where activists of STPP were<br />

protesting against Mir <strong>Murtaza</strong>'s killing. Four STPP activists Shahid Magsi,<br />

Ghulam Mustafa Brohi, Nabi Bakhsh Bhatti and Qamaruddin Kalhoro were<br />

injured.<br />

Khair Magsi said 20 STPP workers had been taken into custody by the police.<br />

Police have also arrested Garho Sheikh, Shahnawaz Bughio, Akbar Dero of<br />

PPP (SB) from Allahabad locality, party sources claimed. They were whisked<br />

away to Dari police station.<br />

Police have also registered FIRs against the protesters at different police<br />

stations. It was the third day of strike and rioting in Larkana on Monday and<br />

hide and seek between protesters and police continued throughout the day.<br />

General Secretary of PPP (SB), Rao Rasheed, and acting President of PPP (SB),<br />

Sindh, Qazi Shafique, said they had been stopped at various places by the<br />
