WOUNDED WERE TOLD BY POLICE TO STAY PUT<br />

KARACHI, Jan 13, 1997: Testifying before the three-member tribunal,<br />

investigating the causes of the death of Mir <strong>Murtaza</strong> <strong>Bhutto</strong>, on Monday, a<br />

police officer said some injured people had also been lying on the scene of the<br />

incident after 10 pm, away from the six dead. ASI Shahzad Hussain, 28,<br />

working at Clifton police station since 1993, said some people who had been<br />

lying on the road were said to be injured because the policemen standing near<br />

them had been directing them not to move or get up. "They should lie in the<br />

same position." Later, he said, when he went back to the police station in a<br />

police mobile, he saw three of the injured who had been travelling along with<br />

the six dead. The witness was answering a question from the tribunal as to<br />

how he was sure that those sitting or lying on the road had been really<br />

injured and not dead.<br />

A: Because they were being told not to move.<br />

Q: Did you see any injured resting against the vehicle?<br />

A: Yes.<br />

Q: Did you also see anybody lying underneath a vehicle?<br />

A: No.<br />

Q: Were the injured handcuffed?<br />

A: I don't remember now.<br />

Q: When you left the scene of the incident with the dead and the injured, did<br />

you see the private vehicles of <strong>Murtaza</strong>'s men parked on the road?<br />

A: Yes.<br />

Q: When were the bodies brought to the JPMC emergency?<br />

A: After past midnight. First to arrive was the body of Ashiq Jatoi, and after a<br />

considerable lapse of time, the five other dead were brought to the<br />
