A COMMEMORATIVE BOOKLET<br />

Reproduced here is the text of a now rare booklet that was printed at Yatala<br />

Labour Prison for the guests who attended ‘The Official Opening of the<br />

Cadell Training Centre, South Australia by the Chief Secretary the<br />

Honourable Sir Lyell McEwin K.B.E., M.L.C. on Tuesday, 31st May,<br />

1960’.<br />

FOREWORD<br />

It has been said that the test of a prison system is what happens when the<br />

prisoner is released.<br />

Modern methods of prison treatment seek the social rehabilitation of<br />

the offender, endeavouring to prepare him to take his place once more<br />

as a normal member of society and helping him feel that he is still part<br />

of the community.<br />

The Cadell Training Centre is the modern approach to one of the<br />

problems of rehabilitation. Here conditions more closely resemble<br />

those of normal life than is possible under traditional prison systems.<br />

The aim is to waken in the trainee the will to lead a good and useful life<br />

on release by the development of character, self-control and a sense of<br />

personal responsibility.<br />
