This also produces some mental wellbeing, which is then augmented by a<br />

general desire to want to know and to understand the law as it applies to a<br />

prisoner’s conviction. Hence, the ‘Bluey’ mystery is something that leaves<br />

things up in the air, a kind of secret that needs to be revealed. A man who<br />

kills another man for whatever reason, then admits to the crime can adjust<br />

for the years spent in penal servitude. But there is a nagging doubt about<br />

someone who publicly has his story told and guilt is unresolved. Hence the<br />

questions: Where is Bluey?; Did he ever exist?; Was he a mere drifter who<br />

drifted off after the murder?; or Was he himself done in?<br />

Such questions are asked by CTC inmates when they read that newspaper<br />

article in the Library. Official answers are not forthcoming, which elicits<br />

mental resignation and a fleeing into religious devotion or, worryingly, there<br />

is a determination on some inmates’ part to flush out the truth of the matter<br />

by indirect confrontation with the man who was involved in the whole affair.<br />

Whether the Bluey mystery gains folk-lore status remains to be seen. Still,<br />

prison inmates’ relatives are asked to bother about the Bluey matter. But on<br />

the outside of prison most individuals are not interested in knowing about<br />

the Bluey mystery.<br />

The premier’s promise to be tough on crime acquired a different focus<br />

when he became the object of someone’s frustrations.<br />
