In Peter Wagner'a 'Das Madrigal und PalestriTia' {\'iprtropo.s of the last, the
Saturday Revdew of June 29, 1878, wrote
that she has 'given a fresh proof of her extraordinary
vocal and dramatic genius. The exquisite
beauty of her singing has never been
shown to greater advantage, and her acting at
every moment reveals true art and feeling.
Among fine touches in Mme. Gerster's dramatic
performance, we may .specially note her wrapping
her head in a eloak before slie nislies in at tlie
fatal door in the last scene, tliat she may at
least not see the descending knife.'
In 1878, 1883, and 1887, slie sang in opera
and concert, in America. She also sang witli
great success at tlie Birmingham Festival of 1879.
On May 29, 1890, she reappeared in London,
at Covent Garden, as Amina, but her vocal
powers were impaired. Soon .after tliis she
retired from public life to her villa at Bologna.
Li 1896 she opened a school of singing at Berlin ;
among her pupils was Fran v. Diilong. a. c.
GES. The German term for G flat.
GESE or GESIUS, Bartholomai-.s (or more
familiarly Bartliel Gbss), was bom about 1555
at Miincheberg near Frankfurt-on-the-Oder in
Brandenburg. Like many of the older Lulheran
cantors lie was first a student of theology. He
was cantor at Frankfurt from at least 1595 to
hisdoath in 1613 (according to somcautliorities),
or 1621 (according to Eitner). His works, like
those of Michael Praetoiius, are im])ortaut as
covering the whole held of the liturgical music
of the older Lutheran Church, and showing the
tlioroughly liturgical character of the older
Lutlieran service with its mixture of Latin and
German and its comlnnatiou of ]>laiii-song and
vocal yiolyphony, before iir.st the Ghui eh Gantata
and then the Organ-nccompanicd Chorale had
swallowed up everything, and before Pietism and
Rationalism between them had destroyed all
further interest in the artistic development of a
])roper Chureli Music in Lutheran or Pi-otestant
Germany. His more important works are as
