of sacred music, comprising MSS. of the 15th-<br />

18tli centuries, and a few rare printed works of<br />

MoDENA. Biblioteca Ester se. The musical<br />

collections here, both ilS. and prijited, are<br />

important. The former contain valuable compositions<br />

of the 15 til century, in which Dunstable<br />

andhis English and foreign contemporaries<br />

and immediate successors are unusually well<br />

represented. There is a very rich collection of<br />

MHS. by Stradella and many 18th-century<br />

oratorios, operas, etc. The printed works are<br />

almost entirely Italian and French, dating from<br />

the 16th to the IStli centuries. For the latter<br />

see V. Finzi : Bibliografia delle Stmnpe musicali<br />

d.dlci R. Biblioteca Estense (^Rivista dclle Biblio-<br />

teche, Ann. iii., iv. and v., containing careful<br />

descriptions of 321 works, with a good Index).<br />

The Stradella collection is described by A.<br />

Catelani : Delle Opere di A. Stradella esistenti<br />

neir Archivio musicale delta R. Bihtioteca Pala-<br />

tina di Modcna. <strong>El</strong>enco con prcfazione e note<br />

(Modena, 1866). Librarian: Dr. I. Luisi.<br />

MoN"TE Gassixo. Besides liturgical MSS.<br />

and treatises of the llth-16th centuries, the<br />

Aljbey Library contains a large collection of<br />

Neapolitan Music in MS. (bequeathed liy ]\Iaes-<br />

tro Kignano), including operas by A. Scarlatti,<br />

Leo, Vinci, etc., and the autograph of Pergolesi's<br />

'Stabat Mater.' A Martyrology of the 14th<br />

century (formerly in the Cistercian monastery<br />

• of SS. Vincent and Ajiastasius at Rome) is<br />

bound up with a valuable collection of 15thand<br />

early 16th-century compositions for one to<br />

four voices, containing works by Bernardus,<br />

Cornago, Dufay, Okegheni, Oriola, Gaforius,<br />

Loyset Compere, Damianus, etc. The words are<br />

Latin, French, Italian, and Spanish. Archivist<br />

and Prior : Mons. Ambrogio Amelli.<br />

MoxzA. The Biblioteca Capitolare contains<br />

some valuable liturgical MSS. of the 10th-<br />

14tli centuries.<br />

Naples, a. The Bililioteca Nazionale possesses<br />

some liturgical MSS. of the 12th and<br />

13th centuries, and a little printed vocal music<br />

of the 16th and 17th centuries. Prefect: Dr.<br />

b. Real Conservatorio di Musica (Conserva-<br />

torio S. Pietro a Majella). The Library is<br />

important for its collection of MS. Italian music<br />

(especially of the Neapolitan school) of the 18th<br />

and early 19th centuries. The printed works<br />

date from 1550 to 1728, and include some rare<br />

sets of madrigals printed at Naples. There is<br />

also a good collection of libretti. Some account<br />

of the contents of the library will be found in<br />

F. Florimo's La Scuola Musicale di Napoli e i<br />

duoi Conservatorii (3 vols. Naples, 1882). See<br />

NovAR.A. The archives of the Cathedral<br />

contain some sacred vocal music, mostly of the<br />

latter part of the 1 7th century.<br />

Padua. a. Biblioteca Nazionale. This<br />

Library contains a few printed musical works of<br />

the 16th and 17th centuries.<br />

b. The Biblioteca Universitaria contains MS.<br />

French and Italian songs (for one and two voices)<br />

of the 15th century ; MS. music in organ tablature<br />

by Hasler, Erbach, Sweelinck, etc., and a<br />

little printed vocal music of the 16th and 17th<br />

centuries.<br />

c. Tlie Library of the Episcopal Seminary<br />

possesses a small collection of tlieories and<br />

other music of the 16tli and 17th centuries.<br />

d. S. Antonio. The archives of the Cappella<br />

Antoniana contain some rare p)rinted music and<br />

several autographs of Tartini. See G. Tebaldini<br />

Parma. R. Istituto Musicale. The musical<br />

works formerly in the Biblioteca Palatina of<br />

Lucca are preserved here. Some of the earlier<br />

printed works are described by Prof. G. Maruffi<br />

in the Rivista dcllc Bibliolcchc (Anno iv.<br />

p. 7).<br />

Perugia. The Biblioteca Capitolare contains<br />

some liturgical MSS., including an Antiphoner<br />

of the 11th century.<br />

Pesako. Biblioteca Oliveriana. A 16thcentury<br />

MS. (songs and lute music) in this<br />

Library is described by A. Saviotti in vol. xiv.<br />

(1889) of the Gionutte Storico dclla Littcratura<br />

Ilaliana. Director : Marchese C. Antaldi.<br />

PisA. The University Library contains a<br />

few theoretical works and a copy of Bucchianti's<br />

'Arie, Scherzi e Madrigali' (Venice, 1627). Librarian<br />

: Prof. XJ. Morini.<br />

Rome. a. Vatican Library. The music in<br />

this library chiefly consists of liturgical and<br />

theoretical works. The former—both printed<br />

and MS.— are especially valuable, and there are<br />

many MS. treatises from the 10th to the 15th<br />

century. A collection of French Troubadour<br />

songs (13th and 14th centuries) and a manuscript<br />

(in the Urbino collection) containing<br />

vocal compositions of the 15th century (Dunstable,<br />

Binchois, Ciconia, etc.) majf also be men-<br />

tioned, but the contents of the library are still<br />
