{i.e. Henry Fitzroy, Duke of Richmond and<br />

Somerset, a natural son of Henry VIII., who<br />

died in 1536). The words of these ballads are<br />

printed in the Yorkshire Arclueological and<br />

TopogrcqMcal Journal, ii. 396. The library<br />

also contains some rare liturgical printed books,<br />

particularly a York Manuals (W. de Worde) of<br />

1509, and a York Missal (Rouen) of 1517.<br />

Rochester. The Music Liljrary of the Cathe-<br />

dral consists of 47S volumes, 84 of which are<br />

in MS. , and contain anthems and services (some<br />

of which are unpublished) by the following composers<br />

:—Hopkins, Henstridge, Loch, Wootton,<br />

Hine, Turner, <strong>El</strong>vey, Cliild, Dupuis, Lambert,<br />

Fussell, Mason, Walmisley, Russell, Rogers,<br />

Marsli, and Pratt.<br />

Shenley, Hekts. Mr. Edward Speyer has<br />

a valuable collection of musical autographs,<br />

many of which are of great interest and rarity.<br />

J. S. Bach (cantata, 'Wo Gott der Herr') ; Beethoven<br />

Shekboene. The school Library contains a<br />

few rare musical printed works, including complete<br />

sets of both parts of the ' Selectissimae<br />

Cantiones ' (Nuremberg, 1587) and 'Lectiones<br />

Hiob'(]Sruremberg,1588) of Lasso ; the 'Balletti'<br />

of Gastoldi (Antwerp, 1601) ; 'Paradise Musicale<br />

' (Antwerp, 1596), and the five-part madri-<br />

gals of Marenzio (Antwerp, 1593).<br />

Stonyhuust. This college possesses the original<br />

MS. of de Vice's responses for Holy Week,<br />

MS. music by Cartoni, and a few litanies,<br />

motets, sequences, etc., by Palestrina.<br />

TENBtTRY. St. Michael's College possesses<br />

the Library of the late Rev. Sir F. A. Gore<br />

Ouseley, containing nearly 2000 volumes, mostly<br />

rare full scores and treatises. It includes the<br />

old Palais Royal collection, with the French<br />

royal arms on the covers, consisting of scores<br />

of operas, motets, etc., by LuUy, Colasse, Destouohes,<br />

Lalande, Campra, and many other<br />

French composers. There is also a very large<br />

collection of MS. Italian sacred music of the<br />

Palestrina school, copied from the library of<br />

the Abbate Santini, and a very valuable MS. of<br />

Handel's 'Messiah,' partly in the composer's<br />

own autograph, and partly in that of J. G.<br />

Smith. It was from this copy that Handel<br />

conducted the work on its first performance in<br />

Dublin, and it contains some various readings<br />

and curious annotations in his own handwriting.<br />

Amongst the autographs in this library may be<br />

mentioned a large collection of curious vocal<br />

music, original and selected, in the handwriting<br />

of Dr. Crotch ; a full score of one of Spohr's<br />

symphonies ; and autographs of Orlando di<br />

Lasso, Orazio Benevoli, Blow, Croft, Bononcini,<br />

Travers, Boyce, Arnold, Mozart, Paganini, and<br />

Mendelssohn. This library also contains copies<br />

of all the treatises of Gaforius and a large number<br />

of early MSS. of Purcell's works. For further<br />

Ware, Herts. St. Edmund's College, Old<br />

Hall. The Library contains a valuable English<br />

manuscript of the 15th century, containing<br />

sacred music by English composers of the<br />

period, including two numbers ascribed to King<br />

Henry VI. For a full account and thematic<br />

WiGAN. The Free Public Library contains<br />

a good collection of works on music, mostly<br />

English publications of the 1 9th century, as<br />

well as a few pianoforte scores of operas, etc.<br />

Windsor. St. George's Chapel. The Chapel<br />

Library contains a good collection of old church<br />

music, many MS. services and anthems, an interesting<br />

old organ book containing the Benedicite<br />

to Child's service in G (in score), and a<br />

copy of Tomkins's ' Musica Deo Sacra' (1668).<br />

Worcester. The Cathedral Library possesses<br />

a fine Sarum Missal, a MS. Service Book<br />

of the 13th century, and the Primus Contra tenor,<br />

Bassns Decani, Secundus Contratenor, and Tenor<br />

Cantoris of Barnard's Church Music.<br />

York. The Minster Library contains 258<br />

musical works, both printed and MS., besides a<br />

large quantity of anthemsandservices. Amongst<br />

the MSS. the following works may be mentioned<br />

—a collection of duets, glees, etc., by Aldrich,<br />

Wise, Blow, etc. ; an installation ode by Hague ;<br />

Te Deums by Haydn, Neukomm, Schicht, and<br />

' Weber ; The Nativity, ' an oratorio by Homilius ;<br />

amass by Naumann ; 'The Intercession,' an<br />

oratorio by King ; a set of three-part Fancies by<br />

Jenkins ;<br />

eight choir-books (formerly belonging<br />

to W. Gostling), containing the voice-parts com-<br />

plete of a large number of anthems and services<br />

of the 17th century ; a Medius Decani part<br />

(early 17th century) of services by J. and R.<br />

Parsons, Mundy, Shepperde, Morley, and Byrd ;<br />

a sonata for trumpet and strings by Purcell,<br />

and much else of interest. The printed music<br />

includes works of Amner (Sacred Hyinnes,
