Jlorley's rules for the first sort are concise<br />

and practical, and agree closely with those<br />

given by Zarlino, the chief being that no sixth<br />

is to be used, the compass of a twelfth is not<br />

to be exceeded, and the parts are not to cross.<br />

He adds directions for the avoidance of special<br />

progressions, which would involve false relations<br />

in inversion. For the second sort the chief<br />

rule given is that no consecntives of any kind<br />

are to be wTitten, but curiously enough the<br />

parts are allowed to cross to the extent of a<br />

third.<br />

The two following examples, from Zarlino and<br />

Morley respectively, show an interesting attempt<br />

on the part of both authors to w'rite a counterpoint<br />

at once invertible in all three ways :<br />
