a) Over i00 different kinds of jobs are bei.ng performed by mentally
retarded persons in the Federal government--48% in w.age bound
classifications, 31% in clerical and 21% in the postal service.
b) Of those employed in the years 1964, 196S and 1966, 62% were
still on the job in 1968.
c) Job mobility to higher pay. grades and changes in job classifica-
tions were experienced in 40% of the placements. This clearly
indicates that the MR has the capability to learn and perform
more difficult tasks.
d) Over one half of the employees had been enrolled in a special
curriculum in school.
e) The employment histories of the employees show 41% without prior
experience, 21% with prior experience, and 25% with full-time
experience, during the year preceding the appointment.
Kennedy (1948, 1962), using matched samples of mildly retarded and
non-retarded subjects, compared the two groups before and after a 12-year
interval on a variety of sociol.ogical variables indicative of social and
economic adjustments. Altough some differences between the groups were
found, they were remarkably similar on economic and social variables.
Over time both groups showed continuity in their adjustments; one differ-
ence 'appeared after the 12-year interval in the tendency of the retarded
to stay at the same job level, while the controls tended to show upward
job mobility.
In 19S6 Phelps completed a follow-up study to determine the post-
school adjustment of mentally retarded children in selected cities in Ohio.
Data included school records, interviews with subjects, andwith employers
when possible. The study involved 105 males and 58 females in 19 cities
