Individual subjects are presented in ‘short course’ modular <strong>for</strong>mat, providing excellent access to<br />
the program <strong>for</strong> engineers and managers in full-time employment who wish to advance their skill<br />
and knowledge base (Appendix C: Education and Training).<br />
11.5.4 Canada<br />
Canada has decided to refurbish four nuclear units. A newly founded university, the University of<br />
Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT), will play an important role in nuclear research and<br />

The University Network of Excellence in Nuclear Engineering (UNENE) is an alliance of<br />
universities, nuclear power utilities, research and regulatory agencies <strong>for</strong> the support and<br />
development of post graduate nuclear education, research and development capability in<br />
Canadian universities. UNENE was established as a not-<strong>for</strong>-profit corporation by the<br />
Government of Canada.<br />
With much encouragement from Ontario Power Generation (part of which used to be Ontario<br />
Hydro) and possibly some funding, UOIT has developed an undergraduate program in Nuclear<br />
Engineering, with 2007 as the first graduating year. Relevant course details are described in:<br />

11.5.5 European collaboration<br />
During recent years, international cooperation in nuclear education and training has contributed<br />
to revitalize the field, and new national and international organizations have been established.<br />
The “Nuclear European Plat<strong>for</strong>m <strong>for</strong> Training and University Organizations (NEPTUNO)” and<br />
the predecessor “European Nuclear Education Network (ENEN)” as well as the EU 6th FP<br />
projects EURAC and ENEN-II, in which <strong>Norway</strong> participates, have prepared future European<br />
nuclear education schemes, degrees and requirements.<br />
11.5.5.1 The NEPTUNO project<br />
The “Nuclear European Plat<strong>for</strong>m <strong>for</strong> Training and University Organisations” (NEPTUNO) builds<br />
on the achievements of the 5th European Framework Program which led to the establishment of<br />
the ENEN Association. The NEPTUNO project enhances further the harmonization of<br />
professional accreditation criteria and the associated training programs across the European<br />
Union.<br />
The “International Seminar on the Nuclear Fuel Cycle” is a pilot training course planned <strong>for</strong> this<br />
purpose. The expected result is:<br />
• An operational network of institutions <strong>for</strong> academic education at the Master, doctoral and<br />
postdoctoral level complemented with research organizations, regulatory bodies and industrial<br />
partners supporting research and development, bench-training and continual learning<br />
schemes.<br />
The project is carried out under the coordination of the French National Institute <strong>for</strong> Nuclear<br />
Sciences and Technology (INSTN) by a consortium of 35 partners, including 25 universities and<br />
