And now, by way <strong>of</strong> conclusion, let me state<br />

that in preparing this rather lengthy paper I could<br />

only hope to furnish the reader with a new<br />

experience, — an experience somewhat like that<br />

<strong>of</strong> passing, for the first time, through <strong>Japanese</strong><br />

streets.<br />

The first general impression <strong>of</strong> a <strong>Japanese</strong><br />

street must be, for most people, even more<br />

vague than strange. Unless you happen to<br />

have senses <strong>of</strong> superlative delicacy, — unless you<br />

possess a visual faculty like that <strong>of</strong> Pierre Loti,<br />

for example, — you can remember very little,<br />

and understand almost nothing, <strong>of</strong> what you<br />

looked at while passing through that street.<br />

Nevertheless you will find yourself surprised and<br />

pleased ; — you will feel, without knowing why,<br />

the sensation <strong>of</strong> the elfish and the odd, — the<br />

charm <strong>of</strong> the unexpected.<br />

Well, in all the child-songs which I have quoted,<br />

perhaps less than half-a-dozen fairly arrested your<br />

attention ; and <strong>of</strong> the rest you probably remem-<br />
