There were two bells, — a large deep-sounding<br />

bell ; and a small bell <strong>of</strong> very sweet tone, — in<br />

charge <strong>of</strong> a little boy. The big bell was tapped<br />

slowly ; the little bell was sounded rapidly ; and<br />

the hyoshigi rattled almost like a pair <strong>of</strong> castanets.<br />

And the effect <strong>of</strong> the gttht as chanted by all<br />

the <strong>of</strong>ficiants in unison, with this extraordinary<br />

instrumentation, was not less impressive than<br />

strange —<br />

sharp dry sounds.
