<strong>of</strong> the Sanscrit " Bodhidharma." And who was<br />

Bodhidharma ?<br />

Bodhidharma, or Bodhitara, was the twenty-<br />

eighth patriarch <strong>of</strong> Buddhism, by succession from<br />

the great Ktsyapa. He went to China as a Bud-<br />

dhist missionary in the first year <strong>of</strong> the Ryo<br />

dynasty [520 A. D.J<br />

; and in China he founded<br />

the great Zen (Dhydna) sect,— whose doctrine is<br />

called " The Doctrine <strong>of</strong> Thought transmitted by<br />

Thought": that is to say, transmitted without<br />

words, either written or spoken. Says Pr<strong>of</strong>essor<br />

Bunyiu Nanjio, in his History <strong>of</strong> the Twelve Bud-<br />

dhist Sects : — "Besides all the doctrines <strong>of</strong> the<br />

MahlySna and HinaySna, there is one distinct<br />

line <strong>of</strong> transmission <strong>of</strong> a secret doctrine, which is<br />

not subject to any utterance at all. According to<br />

this doctrine, one is to see the so-called key to the<br />

thought <strong>of</strong> Buddha, or the nature <strong>of</strong> Buddha,<br />

directly by his own thought." The tradition <strong>of</strong><br />

the Zen doctrine is curious. When the Buddha<br />

was preaching upon the Vulture Peak, there suddenly<br />

appeared before him the great Brahma, who<br />

presented a gold-colored flower to the Blessed<br />

One, and therewith besought him to preach the<br />

Law. The Blessed One accepted the heavenly
