Several days later, word was brought to Ara-<br />

kawa that Kwashin Koji was exhibiting the pic-<br />

ture at Kiyomidzu Temple, and preaching about<br />

it to an immense crowd. Arakawa made all<br />

haste to Kiyomidzu ;<br />

but he arrived there only in<br />

time to see the crowd disperse, — for Kwashin<br />

Koji had again disappeared.<br />

At last one day Arakawa unexpectedly caught<br />

sight <strong>of</strong> Kwashin Koji in a wine-shop, and there<br />

captured him. The old man only laughed good-<br />

humoredly on finding himself seized, and said:<br />

" I will go with you; but please wait until I drink<br />

a little wine." To this request Arakawa made no<br />

objection ; and Kwashin Koji thereupon drank, to<br />

the amazement <strong>of</strong> the bystanders, twelve bowls<br />

<strong>of</strong> wine. After drinking the twelfth he declared<br />

himself satisfied ; and Arakawa ordered him to<br />

be bound with a rope, and taken to Nobunaga's<br />

residence.<br />

In the court <strong>of</strong> the palace Kwashin Koji was<br />

examined at once by the Chief Officer, and<br />

sternly reprimanded. Finally the Chief Officer<br />

said to him — : "It is evident that you have been<br />

deluding people by magical practices ; and for<br />

this <strong>of</strong>fence alone you deserve to be heavily pun-<br />

ished. However, if you will now respectfully
