so that he seemed to be dead. But after his<br />

funeral service had been performed, his disciples<br />

discovered some warmth in the body, and decided<br />

to postpone the burial for awhile, and to keep<br />

watch by the seeming corpse. In the afternoon<br />

<strong>of</strong> the same day he suddenly revived, and questioned<br />

the watchers, asking —<br />

:<br />

" How long have I remained without knowledge<br />

<strong>of</strong> the world ? "<br />

" More than three days," an acolyte made<br />

answer. " We thought that you were dead ; and<br />

this morning your friends and parishioners assembled<br />

in the temple for your funeral service. We<br />

performed the service; but afterwards, finding<br />

that your body was not altogether cold, we put<br />

<strong>of</strong>f the burial; and now we are very glad that<br />

we did so."<br />

Kogi nodded approvingly : then he said : —<br />

" I want some one <strong>of</strong> you to go immediately<br />

to the house <strong>of</strong> Taira no Suke, where the young<br />

men are having a feast at the present moment —<br />

(they are eating fish and drinking wine), — and<br />

say to them — : ' Our master has revived ; and he<br />

begs that you will be so good as to leave your<br />

feast, and to call upon him without delay, be-<br />

cause he has a wonderful story to tell you.' . . .
