At the same time " — continued Kogi— " observe<br />

what Suke and his brothers are doing; — see<br />

whether they are not feasting as I say."<br />

Then an acolyte went at once to the house <strong>of</strong><br />

Taira no Suke, and was surprised to find that<br />

Suke and his brother Juro, with their attendant,<br />

Kamori, were having a feast, just as Kogi had<br />

said. But, on receiving the message, all three<br />

immediately left their fish and wine, and hastened<br />

to the temple. Kogi, lying upon the couch to<br />

which he had been removed, received them with<br />

a smile <strong>of</strong> welcome; and, after some pleasant<br />

words had been exchanged, he said to Suke —<br />

:<br />

" Now, my friend, please reply to some ques-<br />

tions that I am going to ask you. First <strong>of</strong> all,<br />

kindly tell me whether you did not buy a fish<br />

to-day from the fisherman Bunshi."<br />

" Why, yes," replied Suke — " but how did<br />

you know<br />

" Please wait a moment," said the priest. . . .<br />

" That fisherman Bunshi to-day entered your gate,<br />

with a fish three feet long in his basket : it was<br />

early in the afternoon, just after you and Juro<br />

had begun a game <strong>of</strong> go; — and Kamori was<br />

watching the game, and eating a peach — was<br />

he not ><br />
