As highlighted at the 1st IT STAR Workshop on R&D in ICT, which was held in<br />

November 11, 2006, in Bratislava: There are several Techno-Parks as well as<br />

innovation centres, which are only in a setting-up procedure (feasibility studies,<br />

expression of interests etc.) and only some of them have started to operate recently.<br />

Most of them are still not in the operation.<br />

Recognized, planned, sites are (JISA, 2006):<br />

• Belgrade – Mihajlo Pupin Institute;<br />

• Belgrade – Institute Vinča;<br />

• Belgrade – University of Belgrade -Technical faculties;<br />

• Belgrade – Institute for Chemistry, Technology and Metallurgy;<br />

• Novi Sad – Technical University;<br />

• Niš – University of Niš;<br />

• Kraljevo; and<br />

• Technological Park in the Region Podrinje-Kolubara.<br />

“Mihajlo Pupin” Institute – Science and Technology Park (STP MPI) was established<br />

as part of transformation process of one state-owned R&D institute into a network of<br />

new dynamic, highly profitable, efficient and highly qualified companies, integrated<br />

within STP MPI. These companies are a source of new small and medium sized<br />

(SME) incubating spin-of companies in the field of ICT.<br />

The STP MPI was established December 20, 2006 and covers the City of Belgrade.<br />

STP MPI, after the ongoing transformation of the MPI (Mihajlo Pupin Institute), will<br />

provide member companies, in economic terms, strengthening of entrepreneurial<br />

activities as well as enhancing the synergy between enterprise – university –<br />

research – governments.<br />

Specific policy issues:<br />

• Promotion of innovation policy: innovation activities and innovation culture;<br />

• Promotion of development of ICT;<br />

• Small business infrastructure development,<br />

• Enterprise creation and new well-paid jobs, increment value of GDP;<br />

• Support to existing companies (outreach services) within MPI;<br />

• Taxes for the state,<br />

• Improved productivity, quality and exports by diversification of technologybased<br />

products and services.<br />
