"Where'd you get that sweatshirt?" Polly replied.
Two days ago she had sworn never to share another
secret with Joy Strummer as long as she lived. But in
the urgency of her need to exorcise the letter's power
by exposing it to others, Polly couldn't afford to stay
angry with her friend. She uncrumpled the moist piece
of paper. "You know when my dad said some people in
Dingley Falls had gotten some dirty letters? Well, I just
did."
"You did?"
"Somebody left it in the door. Listen, this is serious.
Tell me what you think I ought to do, if I was you, I
mean. Do you think, well, I just don't want to have to
show it to my dad. Maybe we could ask your mom?"
