"Splendid!" called out the rector, who had no idea<br />

he detested the very sound of Mrs. Troyes's voice.<br />

"Well, sing something with some snap to it, Evelyn.<br />

I can't stand that lilimimiheehee shrieking. It would send<br />

a dog under the house," bellowed Bredforet, and, "Oh,<br />

shut up, William," said his tiny wife.<br />

So Sidney Blossom asked the moody Kate to turn<br />

his pages, and her mother stared her into acceptance.<br />

Then, with hand posed Peabody Institute-style on the<br />

Steinway, Evelyn began "Ah, Sweet Mystery of Life,"<br />

swept up to Schubert, and crashed to a halt with "Un<br />

bel di" when June Hayes dropped the glass robin that<br />

had belonged to Ernest Ransom's grandmother. It<br />

shattered on the polished floor. Mrs. Hayes screamed,<br />

her husband winced, Mrs. Troyes slid off her note, and<br />

the room came to a full stop.
