vessels had sunl_s in a storm. After this the'Pomeranians fished together
with the Danish fishermen annually from October to March near Hela. Not
much later Swedish salmon fishermen crossed the Baltic Sea in their sail
boats from Schonen in order to catch salmon with driftnets along the coast
of Farther Pomerania and in the Danzig Deep.

After the foundation of the(International Board for Oceanogrphy
salmon research grew enormously. Since about 1900 many countries liberate
salmon fry that have been obtained through artificial fertilization of thé
eggs, as well as young and have carried out tagging experimenis , (Sweden
since 16°). The publications that have been stimulated by the Board now
give also the first indications of the fishing in the Baltic Sea. From
Denmark (Bornholm) and Finland (Gulf of Bothnia) we have reports on the
of salmon since 1886. Soon there appear also descriptions of the
landings
manner in which the salmon fishery was being carried out (Trybom and Wolle-
back 1904, Petersen and Otterstr8m 1904, Henking and Fischer 1905, Sandmann
1906, Trybom 1910, Henking 1913, 1916 and 1931, Nordquist 1924).
In the northern Gulf of Bothnia fishing is done mainly in the
vicinity of river moùths with setnets during spring and fall. These nets
are not anchored but are suspended from posts. In part,•several nets are .
arranged so that they work like a basket. In the Gulf of Bothnia are used
dragnets (120 x 5 m, 60 mm mesh). One also uses herring baskets for the
capture of salmon. In-Finland, where the salmon stands in second place
behind the herring in importance, one.fishes in winter with salmon nets
under the . ice. •
In the central Baltic Sea, on the southern coast,as well as
on the northern Coast, set lines played the greatest role_from fall. iill
