traits were obtained in the laboratory from fixed specimens archived in the Discovery<br />
Collections at the National Oceanography Centre, <strong>Southampton</strong> (NOC). This material<br />
was collected at depths from 150 to 4850 m. The samples were obtained over a period<br />
<strong>of</strong> 20 years as part <strong>of</strong> different programmes. The samples were collected using a semiballoon<br />
otter trawl (OTSB14) and a Granton trawl.<br />
The specimens were first fixed in 10% formalin, and transferred to 70%<br />
alcohol for storage.<br />

The gonads <strong>of</strong> 5-10 specimens per sample were dissected out by opening the<br />
oral side <strong>of</strong> the disc along each radius, previously the whole animals had been dampdried<br />
