To expose each embryo a wlndow was cut in the shell rvith a 1.5 cm.
dental separatíng dlsc on a 5 cm. mandrel,mounted in a hand_held
electrlc drîll (B¡ãck and Decker, model /010).
Albumen was removed from opened eggs wíth disposable sterile 5 ml .
syi'inges artd #16 gauge urrpointed needles (Bec.ton Dickinson e Co.).
After treatment, those eggs cultured with an artificial air_space
above the embryo were sealed with a J cm. circle of ster¡le parafilm
(American Can Co., Neenah, t^/is. ),attached to the shell by a ring of
plasticîne-l ike materiar (caurking cord, gtop Hardware products, ttontrear,
Ouá.¡. These eggs were not turned during subsequent íncubatîon (Fîg. 6).
Other eggs, from whích the introduced aír was removed (either by
re-expansion of the punctured air cell or by filiing the eggs rvith
albumen or Fl2 medium) were closed with â I cm. circle of sterile para_
film, sealed to the shet with a square of frexibre Erastoprast(product
1211; Smith E Nephew Ltd., Hull, England)
