The <strong>grammar</strong> of the indeclinables 13<br />

secti<strong>on</strong>s the prädaya/:l in bahuvrïhis are called upasargas (5, 4, 119; 6, 2,<br />

177; and see § 19). As to Iinguistic facts all the prädaya/:l are met with in<br />

compositi<strong>on</strong>s with an accompanying noun, although some are seldom and<br />

others frequently met with in th is functi<strong>on</strong>.<br />

(2). As 'close adverb' to a tiT\ or prefix to a krt ('gat:', SP. 1. 4, 60) .<br />

- Most of the prädaya/:l are regularly c<strong>on</strong>strued as gatis. however dus<br />

and su are not of ten met with in this functi<strong>on</strong> before finite verbs. e.g. dus<br />

caranti (BRW. 111 703, Rämäyal).a 3. 2, 25); the dicti<strong>on</strong>aries moreover<br />

menti<strong>on</strong>: sunirvavau (MWO. 1220), su baddhvä (BRW. VII 1025.<br />

Mrcchakatikä 176, 1 with the suffix ktvä. yet no imitati<strong>on</strong> of Vedic idiom.<br />

SP. 7, I, 38). It appears from the rare use of these c<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong>s that<br />

these groups of finite verb with su and dus are analogy-formati<strong>on</strong>s af ter<br />

compound ta-participles.<br />
