examples to th is rather important sütra, some instances of its applicati<strong>on</strong><br />
ale added here:<br />
formati<strong>on</strong> of the neuter of adjectives: na~ta-sri1:z (nom. sg. m. and<br />
fem.) > na~ta-sri (idem neuter), M<strong>on</strong>ier Williams, Grammar § 190;<br />
formati<strong>on</strong> of an avyayibhäva of which the sec<strong>on</strong>d member is a noun<br />
ending in l<strong>on</strong>g vowel or diphth<strong>on</strong>g: * anu-gar'lgä- > * anu-ga;lga- (2, 4, 18<br />
and 1,2,47) > anu-gangam (2, 4, 83 in combinati<strong>on</strong> with 4, 1, 2; 7, I, 24<br />
and 6, I, 197) .<br />

The sutras I , 2, 53--'-57 are neither sufficiently clear in Böhtlingk' s<br />
translati<strong>on</strong> nor in the commentary of the Käsikä. A few suggesti<strong>on</strong>s and<br />
surmises are here added.<br />
The Mahäbhä!?ya (I p. 229) explains tad in sü. 53 as referring to the<br />
different artificial sa~jiiäs such as ti. ghu. gha. bha (adhy. 1 pä. 1 su. 64,<br />
20, 22 and pä. 4 sü. 18); the opp<strong>on</strong>ent says such sa~jnäs should not be<br />
have been taught because a sa~jiiä ought to show clearness and bear<br />
weight (tat-prämä1Jyäd). but the right theory is. 'instructi<strong>on</strong> makes the<br />
term' (sa'!lFiäna'!l sa'!ljiiä) .<br />
The Käsikä and Böhtlingk c<strong>on</strong>nect tad of su. 53 with vyakti-vacane 1 )<br />
in su. 51. For the following of the commentary of the Käsikä the reader<br />
will receive some help by the informati<strong>on</strong> that the indicati<strong>on</strong> lup ('change<br />
of meaning with no adding of suffix and no changing of gender and<br />
number') is met with in the following sfitras:<br />
4, 2, 4 sq. name of time derived from name of asterism,<br />
4, 2, 81 sqq. .. empire inhabitants,<br />
4, 3, 166 sq. .. fruit .. tree,<br />
5, 2, 105 .. spot sikatä and sarkarä,<br />
5, 3, 98, a [nick-]name of an individual pers<strong>on</strong> based <strong>on</strong> similarity,<br />
5, 3, 99, proper name given to an idol (väsudeva etc.) which was made<br />
by a devalaka as a means for obtaining alms,<br />
5, 3, 100 a symbolical expressi<strong>on</strong> used as a proper name; e.g. devapatha.<br />
The Käsikä, thus, differs from the Mahäbhä!?ya, in taking sarpjfiä in the<br />
meaning of 'proper name' and directs the polemics against 1, 2, 51 in<br />
c<strong>on</strong>nexi<strong>on</strong> with SP. 4, 2, 81 sqq., 5, 2, 105; 5, 3, 98 sqq., ignoring the two<br />
cases 4, 2,4 sq. and 4, 3, -166 sq. in its argumentati<strong>on</strong>. It further interprets<br />
yoga in su. 54 and 55 (cf. yuktavat in su. 51) in the technical meaning of<br />
the etymologists (MWD. p. 856: 'the c<strong>on</strong>nexi<strong>on</strong> of a word with its root,<br />
original or etymological meaning' ) and as antithesis to rüdhi (1.1. , p. 885:<br />
'the more amplified or popular or c<strong>on</strong>venti<strong>on</strong>al meaning' ).<br />
