Then, we may menti<strong>on</strong> the author's inclinati<strong>on</strong> to announce in the last<br />
sütra of a päda, more or less directly, the subject of the following päda<br />
(cf. 8, 2, 108, sa1[lhitäyäm, and 6, 1, 223 [anta~] samäsasya [udätta~].<br />
the positive rule to which 6 pä. 2 gives the excepti<strong>on</strong>s. Likewise we meet<br />
here and there with the opposite form of arrangement, when the au thor<br />
at the beginning of a päda gives a few additi<strong>on</strong>s to the foregoing päda<br />
(e.g. 3, 3, 1-2 and 3, 4, 1-8) 1). In all these cases <strong>on</strong>e might think of<br />
oratorical devices for giving emphasis or rousing interest.<br />
As a fourth subsidiary form of compositi<strong>on</strong> may be reck<strong>on</strong>ed the'inserti<strong>on</strong><br />
by emergency', in which case the author places, indifferent where,<br />
<strong>on</strong>e or two sütras which for some reas<strong>on</strong> or other could not be placed<br />
in the c<strong>on</strong>tex! required by logic; e.g. the definiti<strong>on</strong> of karma-dhäraya is<br />
given in 1, 2, 42 instead of 2, 1, 49 (or af ter 2, I, 23) , to avoid the<br />
difficulties which would arise from su. 1, 4, 1.<br />

A fact of peculiar interest in Pä~ini' s compositi<strong>on</strong> is the tendency towards<br />
dichotomy in . the main divisi<strong>on</strong>s of his work. As th is dichotomy repeats<br />
itself three times, the internal arrangement of the A~tädhyäyi can be<br />
symbolised by the formula: IAa, lAb, !Ba, !Bb, IIAa, IIAb, IIBa, IIBb.<br />
