Before determining the place of the adhyäyas 1 and 2 in the plan of the<br />

compositi<strong>on</strong> of the total work it is desirabIe and even necessary to analyse<br />

these adhyäyas internally, since their c<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong> offers great difficulties<br />

and many an opportunity for testing the general principles formulated in<br />

the secti<strong>on</strong>s 70 sq. In this analysis (§ 76 sqq.) ma in groups and sub~groups<br />

are distinguished, the c<strong>on</strong>tents, if necessary, commented up<strong>on</strong>, and notes<br />

<strong>on</strong> the functi<strong>on</strong> in the compositi<strong>on</strong> added. Preliminarily to a subsequent<br />

summary we may say that this functi<strong>on</strong> can be of three kinds: (1) the<br />

passage treats of a general subject, giving for in stance the definiti<strong>on</strong> of a<br />

fundamental grammatical noti<strong>on</strong>, (2) it has the character of a bridge<br />

between a sütra or series of sütras found in the adhyäyas 3-5 (indicated<br />

in agreeinent with § 73 sq. as 'div. I B' ) and a sütra or passage in adhy.<br />

6-8 (= 'div. 11') , or (3) if has a more independent character, in so far as<br />

the discussi<strong>on</strong> forms a unity in itself and may be compared to similar<br />

discussi<strong>on</strong>s in div. IB. Numerous and important secti<strong>on</strong>s of the last kind<br />

will prove the adhyäyas 1-2 to be coordinate with the adhyäyas 3-5.<br />
