The methods and mannerisms of composition in Pä~ini' s Al?tädhyäyi 65
yet overlooking the difficulties caused by Pä~ini's mnemotechnical devices
and his definition of the term pada. we can say in general th at adhyayas
6-7 explain the coalescence of the wood~components into words. and
adhy. 8 the further development of the sentence.
Similarly the dichotomical division of adhy. 8 into 8. 1 and 8. 2-4 is
clear. the first päda treating of the sentence~accent. and the three last
padas (with exception of some präsatigika~sütras) of the articulative~
phonological changes of the words as parts of the sentence.
The problem which now remains. is how to prove the dichotomical
division of 6-7. This case is not easily solved. owing to the author's
tendency to attach greater importance to mnemotechnics than to logical
consistence.
Putting aside for a while the question wheth~r there is any dichotomy
we can prima facie distinguish five sections:
a. Adhy. 6. 1. 1-157. general phonological rules.
p. Adhy. 6. 1. 158-222. accent of uncompounded words.
y. Adhy. 6. 1. 223-6. 2. fin., accent of compounds 1).
~. Adhy. 6. 3. 1 ~fin .. morphology of the first member of a compound;
a few präsafl.gika~sïitras . (97 sq .. 110) refer to the second member; sU.
111-113 are inserted for the sake of mnemotechnic economy (the anuv~tti
of dirghal;t being made use of); the sutras 131-137 form likewise an
insertion and probably an interpolation.
E. Adhy. 6. 4. 1-7. 4. fin. has for adhikära~sUtra sü. 6. 4, 1 afl.gasya,
whereas a subsection (6. 4. 129~fin.) has moreover the adhikära bhasya.
The first thing that strikes us is that section y forms a concatenative link
between p and ~. s,o th at we can combine p + y as theory of accent or
y + ~ as theory of compounds. su. 6. 1. 158 'anudättaf!l padam ekavarjam'
serving as adhikära for the sections p + y. and su. 6. 1. 223 samäsasya as
such for y + ~. In the second place it is worth while noticing that the
adhikäras afl.gasya and bhasy.a stand iJ! correlation with padasya of 8. 1. 16
provided that pada is taken here in the sense of a noun~stem under certain
conditions. (cf. the pada~bha~section. SP. 1. 4. 14 sqq.). However. since
this correlation is only secondary because of padasya in the first place
denoting the complete word as part of asentence. the question of examina~
tion has only to do with the grouping of the sections a-Eo IE P~ini. when
construing his plan of composition. has been influenced by the supposed
tendency to dichotomy. was then the antithesis between (y +
