The author has given complete pädas (I pä. 3; 2 pä. 1-3) to subjects
which demanded an extensive discussion. In the pädas I, 1 and I, 2 the
most fundamental grammatical notions are explained. The shorter discussions
are placed at the end of 1 pä. 2 or coUected in the fourth päda of
the first and second adhyäya. The last mentioned Eact combined with the
character of l. 4, 109 sq. as a 'distinctive insertion' (§ 71 no. 2) proves the
two adhyäyas to be unities in respect to composition (cf. § 73 sq., IAa_and
lAb) .
Finally, taking into consideration that the ma in subjects of grammar are
its fundamental notions and the theory of declension, conjugation, composition.
The discussion of the pada-bha-passage and the ku-gati-passage has
proved that the first two adhyäyas must have formed, Erom the very
beg inning a part of the Sütra-pätha.
Although several parts of these adhyäyas have a general character (e.g.
1 pä. 1 and l. 2, 1-46) or form a bridge between div. IB and div. 11, on
the other hand very extensive portions, such as the discussion of the
compounds or the noun-cases, agree in character completely with the
sections which make up adhyayas 3-5. Therefore we may symbolise the
composition of the Aljtädhyäyi by the formula: (1, 2; 3, 4-5). (6-8).
In other words, the first part of the argumentation needed Eor proving the
scheme of division given in § 73 sq. has come to a close.
Adhyäyas 6--8 Eorm a unity of composition when compared with adhy.
meanings and the group 6-8 explaining the coalescence of word-components
into words and of words into sentences.
The first division of these three adhyäyas into the group 6--7 and the
singJe adhyäya 8 is evident, for, although the distribution of the subjects
over these adhyäyas cannet be described with accuracy in a short formula,
