PEELUDE.
''EATH cares—an ever growing load
The paths of penury I've trode
For many years with aching feet
Yet, I have stooped along the way,
To pluck a flower or leafy spray,
And found their fragrance sweet.
The daisy, or the buttercup,
The smallest gem that lifteth up
To heaven its shining face,
Hath made my burdens lighter seem,
A brighter radiance round me gleam,
Each gloomy thought to chase.
And I have striven to cull a few.
And humbly offer unto you.
Whoso may choose to take
Those simple flowers, for ye may find
In them a balm to cheer the mind.
Or soothe the body's ache.
