JOSEPHINE. 33
Once again we fall and rise
On the reawakened seas
Once again our vessel flies,
Sprung to life before the breeze.
Wastes of water fade behind,
Capes aiid islands rise to view
Dreams of home invade the mind
Of the dullest of our crew.
If you e'er were on the ocean
Till your step became a roll,
And your mind conceived a notion
That the brine was over all,
You will know with what delight
We beheld our bark advance.
Till the naked eye could sight
Our beloved land of France.
New the destined port is gained,
" With a welcome and a will; "
Yet my boding heart is pained
With a sense of coming ill,
And I drag my tardy feet.
With increasing doubt and fear.
To the home I left replete
With a love so deeply dear.
Ah ! the cottage door is fast ;
There is none to heed my call
Yes, my brief romance is past.
And despair is over all.
In the little churchyard nigh.
Underneath the grassy sod.
Child and mother's ashes lie.
And their souls have risen to God.
I am little
skilled in books,
Nor to theologic schools
