Until our cunning foes contrived<br />

Their leaguer to complete.<br />

And when their waspish legions swarmed<br />

Around our luckless town,<br />

Then did our guns <strong>and</strong> mitrailleuses<br />

By thous<strong>and</strong>s mow them down ;<br />

Yet senseless Victory fled from us,<br />

Their brutal brows to crown.<br />

Our s'trongest forts <strong>and</strong> barricades<br />

They captured by surprise.<br />

And when we stretched our arms to them<br />

They tui'ned away then- eyes,<br />

And savage-heartedly refused<br />

To come <strong>and</strong> fraternise.<br />

0, Liberty! Equality!<br />

Fraternity! so dear<br />

To every Communistic heart.<br />

Sweet words which we revere.<br />

Ye fell unheeded on the dull.<br />

Debased Versailliau ear.<br />

The Versaillaise, their treacheries.<br />

Their butcheries <strong>and</strong> their rage,<br />

Shall yet descend to evil fame<br />

On Communistic page.<br />

And drape their memories in disgrace<br />

Through many a coming age.<br />

Fools ! fools they were who trusted life<br />

To wretches such as those !<br />

Our wary captain better judged<br />

The nature of his foes,
