Until our cunning foes contrived
Their leaguer to complete.
And when their waspish legions swarmed
Around our luckless town,
Then did our guns and mitrailleuses
By thousands mow them down ;
Yet senseless Victory fled from us,
Their brutal brows to crown.
Our s'trongest forts and barricades
They captured by surprise.
And when we stretched our arms to them
They tui'ned away then- eyes,
And savage-heartedly refused
To come and fraternise.
0, Liberty! Equality!
Fraternity! so dear
To every Communistic heart.
Sweet words which we revere.
Ye fell unheeded on the dull.
Debased Versailliau ear.
The Versaillaise, their treacheries.
Their butcheries and their rage,
Shall yet descend to evil fame
On Communistic page.
And drape their memories in disgrace
Through many a coming age.
Fools ! fools they were who trusted life
To wretches such as those !
Our wary captain better judged
The nature of his foes,
