But Heaven may suffer tyrants long,
And evil laws prevail,
Oppression rioting in wrong.
While wretched captives wail
At last the vials of wrath shall burst
And sweep from earth the race accurst.
True, man may grind his fellow man
In bondage and disgrace
But ever since the world began
The history of our race
Attests that love of liberty
Though crushed, can never, never die.
And when to desperation driven.
The long oppressed arise.
The avengers of offended Heaven
Its lightnings in tlieu* eyes
Shall despots, who bestride the world.
In ruin from their seats be hurled !
And desolate as yonder pile
Shall be the tyrant's hearth;
The dwelling-place of reptiles vile,
A hate-spot on the earth;
And history shall embalm his name
In everlasting scorn and shame.
