But last as long as life itself,
And smooth its rugged way.
ne'er came messengers so sweet
To any other door
;
1 took them from their tiny box
And kissed them o'er and o'er ;
And fully, fondly credited
The message which they bore.
I made them yet, and yet again.
With fragrant breath repeat
The message you had sent to me
By messengers so sweet
And blessed you, in my heart of hearts,
For love so true and sweet.
TO
NORA.
'"OU charge me with being a rover.
Still ready to flatter and swear,
But view ye the matter all over.
And you'll own the charge is unfair.
I've loved pretty damsels in dozens.
And praised them m sonnet and song,
But then they were neighbours or cousins,
And loving them I could not be wrong.
For Scriptural precepts have told me
To love even such as are foes.
And where is the law to withhold me
From loving friends lovely as those.
