PEACE AND WAR. 203 While battlefields with mangled slain were strewed Great ghastly wounds and helpless maimed were rife ; Dire famine pinched, fierce pestilence pursued, And all the evils that embitter life. Proud palaces and splendid cities blaze; Destruction, plunder, baleful crimes increase. Till nations round in holy horror raise Their hands, and cry in name of heaven to cease! Then pause the combatants in stunned amaze. And either side, exhausted, welcomes peace. Each paused exhausted, gazed around, and grieved To see the evil each on each had wrought And all for what? It scarce could be conceived What one refused and what the other sought And now so easily was peace achieved. The wonder was they ever could have fought. Their rage extinguished and their arms resigned, They build anew their homes in ruins laid, To honest arts anew direct their mind. And re-uiiite the broken links of Trade. Can years of peace and industry combined Efface the havoc months of war have made ? "What struggles these! what sufferings worse than vain ! When all had passed, I cried, in sad surprise ; "How long shall war his dismal part sustain. And brothers mangle brothers in such guise? Speak! spirit, speak! and make your answer plain " The spirit answered— " Until man grow wise."

Stumbling-blocks enough are strewn, Tho' ourselves should scatter none. Brother, raise your weaker brother Sinking in the mu-e ; Strive within his breast to smother Lawless, low desire. Even he may yet be woo'd. Won to actions great and good. Sister, do not loathe your sister Tho' her feet have slid Alas ! you know not how she miss'd her Footing as she did A gentle word, a look of love. Might yet direct her steps above. Willing, hopeful, cheerful toilers, Shutting from the breast Pride and envy, and such spoilers Of our scanty rest Loving many, hating none, Comrades, let us journey on.
