METRICAL TALES.<br />

Her large <strong>and</strong> lustrous azure eyes<br />

Enchanted all they met;<br />

And none on whom she deigned to smile<br />

Her smile could e'er forget.<br />

The Baron's daughters all were fair,<br />

Except the eldest born,<br />

Guuhild, whom little grace of form<br />

Or feature did adorn<br />

Whom all her sisters did despise,<br />

Her very father scorn.<br />

Tlie burly Baron held his own<br />

From lawless neighbours' wrong.<br />

The foremost still in war or chase.<br />

For he was brave <strong>and</strong> strong<br />

And dearly did he prize the sweets<br />

Of wassail, jost,<br />

<strong>and</strong> song.<br />

One night he feasted in his hall<br />

In more than wonted state<br />

A hundred lackeys watch his nod,<br />

And rival knights await<br />

To heap the choicest fruits of earth<br />

Upon his golden plate.<br />

They fill<br />

his ample goblet up<br />

With frequent draughts of wine<br />

The noblest hills or vales produce<br />

On all the lordly Ehiue,<br />

Till o'er his broad <strong>and</strong> rugged face<br />

There spread a smile benign.<br />

"Enough, enough, my merry men.<br />

The banquet's pleasures cloy ;<br />

Go, bid our choicest minstrel come.<br />

And bring the chorded toy
