"Oh, Mountain Tarn!" I cried,
Befitting emblem of the poet's mind."
"in thee we find
II.
Like waters in the garish Hght of day.
It sparkles in the favom* of the crowd;
Light pleasures flush it like the summer-ray.
Light sorrows darken like the winter-cloud
The passions toss it in their subtle play,
As waves are tossed by breezes low or loud.
In life's fresh morn it mhrors all
things fair.
For golden hopes its inmost depths illume
Truth, justice walk the world, a gladsome pair,
Young beauty smiles, wide earth is clad in bloom
Anon come disappointment, cark, and care
O'ershadow all, enshroud the whole in gloom
Nor darker mountain lake in midnight blast
Than poet's mind by all these ills o'ercast.
ATOMS IN THE MORNING SUNBEAMS.
fHE cock hath waked me from a troublous dream,
To watch the advent of a summer's day
sits golden splendours through my window gleam,
But most I follow one distmctive ray
Which runs across ray chamber like a stream
Wherein a thousand thousand atoms play :
They reel, and wheel, retire and make advance,
Now darkling hide, now sparkle into view
Again are lost ;
and yet again puisue
The countless windings of their airy dance.
