A draught that gave him power to sweep
Adown through the future years,
And look behmd, from an airy steep,
On his former self and peers.
And he seemed to see himself arise
From envy and slander's slime.
As an eagle soars through cloudless skies,
In a glorious summer's prime.
And he seemed to hear a voice anear
"Thou hast bravely borne thy load,
Hast spent thy might to further the right,
And thy future is with God."
And he waked refreshed, and went his way,
To the struggles of his lot
Nor all through life to his dying day.
Was that cheering dream forgot.
A GLOEIOUS DEATH. (?)
SOLDIEE lay, in the gairish day.
Amidst the dying and dead.
While the skylark soared, and merrily poured
His melodies overhead.
The soldier lay on the battle field,
In sorrow and bitter pine,
For the fateful ball that caused his fall
Had crashed through the soldier's spine.
